An Engine Control Unit (ECU) also known as an Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Unit/Module (PCU, PCM) if it controls both an engine and a transmission, is an electronic control unit which controls various aspects of an internal combustion engine's operation. The most simple ECUs simply control the quantity of fuel injected into each cylinder each engine cycle. More advanced ECUs found on most modern cars also control the ignition timing, Variable Valve Timing (VVT), the level of boost maintained by the turbocharger (in turbocharged cars), and control other peripherals. ECUs determine the quantity of fuel, ignition timing and other parameters by monitoring the engine through sensors. These can include, MAP sensor, throttle position sensor, air temperature sensor, oxygen sensor and many others.Before ECUs most engine parameters were fixed. The quantity of fuel per cylinder per engine cycle was determined by a carburetor or injector pump

1)Erratic idle/stall at traffic lights/general poor running and starting problems which can be intermittent.2) ONE injector ceasing to function.3) Nonsense fault codes when code reader is connected.4) Code reader will not communicate with the ECU.

ISC- Idle Speed Control The Idle Speed Control (ISC) servo, located on the throttle chamber regulates and controls the idle for the loads placed on the engine.
The ISC servo is a stepper motor that regulates the amount of air taken in through the bypass circuit of the intake manifold by opening and closing the servo valve located in the air passage. The ECU will supply voltage in one polarity direction, which will turn the motor in a particular rotation.

The ECU uses several sensor inputs to determine the operating condition of the engine and the loads being placed on it. The ECU adjusts the idle for air conditioning and automatic transmission loads and controls fast idle for cold start. The ECU uses the idle speed control (ISC) servo to make all of the adjustments to the idle.
With this many miles on it, it is probably gummed up. I would try cleaning the throttle body and the ISC Servo. That could very well cure the problem.

The sensor is usually located on the butterfly spindle so that it can directly monitor the position of the butterfly throttle valve.The sensor is usually a potentiometer and therefore provides a variable resistance dependent upon the position of the butterfly valve (and hence throttle position). The sensor signal is used by the Engine Control Unit (ECU) as an input to its control system. The ignition timing and fuel injection timing (and potentially other parameters) are altered depending upon the position of the throttle, and also depending on the rate of change of that position. For example, in fuel injected engines, in order to avoid stalling, extra fuel may be injected if the throttle is opened rapidly (mimicking the accelerator pump of carburetor systems).

Engines that use a MAP sensor are typically fuel injected. The manifold absolute pressure sensor provides instantaneous manifold pressure information to the engine's electronic control unit (ECU). This is necessary to calculate air density and determine the engine's air mass flow rate, which in turn is used to calculate the appropriate fuel flow
An engine control system that uses manifold absolute pressure to calculate air mass, is using the speed-density method. Engine speed (RPM) and air temperature are also necessary to complete the speed-density calculation. Not all fuel injected engines use a MAP sensor to infer mass air flow, some use a MAF sensor (mass air flow).
